Aerospace Engines A to Z

Major Frank B. Halford, later Sir, was part of the BHP group.

-He was director at Airdisco, where he redesigned the "Puma", becoming known as "Up-rated Puma" and later as "Nimbus", with 335 hp. And he was head of the design team at Cirrus and at DeHavilland for all the Gipsy.

-In 1928 he joined Napier, where he made the "H" Rapier, Dagger and Sabre engines.

-In 1941 he began to project the Goblin and within a year, this engine ran on the test benches in Hatfield.

-Only two months later he gave the design push, flying on the Gloster Meteor II on March 5, 1943.

-On September 20th of the same year it flew on the DH Vampire prototype.

-In the month of January 1944, the DH Goblin turbine H-1 ("H" for Halford and 1 for being the first one. See DH engines). flew on the prototype of American Lockeed's "Shooting Star".

-And in January 1945 it received the certificate as a turbine for aircraft propulsion, being the first to obtain it.

-To obtain this certificate, it ran for 500 hours in the official test without changing any component.

-We refer the reader to the DeHavilland chapter to know the different engines designed by Halford:

-The H-1 was the "Goblin".

-The H-2 was the “Ghost”.

-The H-3 was a turboprop.

-The H-4 was the first “Gyron”.

-The H-5 was a derivative of H-2.

-The H-6 was the "Gyron Junior" and the H-7 was an air generator. From here, DH motors changed their brand name.

Halford project
“Halford project”

-Halford was a pioneer of the reaction age. He proposed a Turbojet project with an axial engine and 15,000 lbs. of thrust and at maximum temperatures of 1,000° C before flowing into the turbines.

-The engine weighed 6000 lbs with a diameter of 5 feet and 17 feet long.
