Christened Engines
Engine “Christening”
-Here is a work done by the author in a happy moment after finishing Version 8.
It is a "Divertimento" or "literary Toy" as a "bis", in theatrical terms. Rather a
“Grand Finale”
TITULO:
Aerospace engines by their own name
(or a way to “christen” a machine)
-This Annex is an exercise or experiment of relating the engine's name with that, which could have been the source of its manufacturer's inspiration.
-As shown in the main text, there are many engines that have been christened with names. This is seen in certain countries since the beginning of aviation until even today, in some brands.
-The truth is that many references have been "cold" as TPE-331, CFM-56, etc. Others preferred to give a certain "soul" to their machines like "Merlin" so famous and beloved, "Lucifer", "Trent", etc.
-Thanks to this publication A-Z, it has been possible to gather most of them, and some are described below. It is noted that some countries such as Russia (USSR), Germany and Italy have not put names to their engines (DB-605, M-25, AR-115, etc.) and refer to them with technical references.
-In the US they have done it for quite some time. Especially France "christened" its engines, and an exemplary case is Great Britain where they preferred giving names that are related to their country.
-Even today the Rolls-Royce "Trent" -in its third version- has the name of a river, and is installed on the Airbus A-380.
-It has not been the same for an aviation mechanic with his toolbox heading for a machine that is identified with alphanumeric references (e.g. IO-360-A1B6) or making it to an engine with the name Merlin on an airplane called Spitfire. (Brands aside).
-By the way, the Rolls-Royce Merlin is not the wizard's name, but the name of a typical bird in England. As you will see below where all this is clarified.
