Engineer Nemorin-Laurent Causan was notable for his revolutionary designs, although he started in a more orthodox way, as we can see in the design of a conventional V-8.

-He made the inline 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder designs that are shown in the Tellier-Panhard chapter (see).

-He studied at the famous French "Les Arts et Metiers" schools, which brought art schools together with those that currently would be called polytechnic or engineering schools.

-He made a large amount of patents to protect his inventions that he would apply to projects he would realize later.

-They include several aircraft engines that we will see below:

Causan - Patent 402180
“Patent 402180” (PiP)

Causan - Patent 407159
“Patent 407159” (PiP)

-In the examples that are shown here we see the influence of the Etchegoin-Causan engine: in each cylinder there are two opposing pistons with a central combustion chamber, and two coordinated crankshafts at each end.

Causan - Patent 631587
“Patent 631587” (PiP)

-This patent offers a valveless engine as a sliding sleeve opens and closes ports at the TDC.

-In patent 435571 conventional valves are replaced by pistons.

Patent 435571
“Patent 435571” (PiP)

Causan - Patent 557079
“Patent 557079” (PiP)

-As the above valves are pistons, this time with more complex kinematics.

-Interestingly, the aircraft engine in patent 432899 relates to a bi-rotary radial where the engine body rotates in one direction and the crankshaft in another.

Causan - Patent 432899
“Patent 432899” (PiP)

Cuasan - Patent 615318 de 1927
“Patent 615318 from 1927” (PiP)

Causan - Patent 615318, inside cross section
“Patent 615318, inside cross section” (PiP)

-The latter patent -from which Junkers would make the 223 and 224 engines - are designs that are rescued by Prof. Zima. An important example is the one for the engine found in the files of the Museum of Munich.
