William Beardmore's "Beardmore Aero Engines Ltd." in Scotland, was a recognized firm that began in 1914 with the construction of its first aero engine, obtaining Austro-Daimler licenses for the 90 and 120 hp engines, improving the latter including dual ignition and double carburetor.

-Soon it reached 135 hp.

-Several thousand 120 hp engines were built until 1917.

-They put two Beardmore carburetors instead of one.

-The Bosch lubrication box had six pistons for the main bearings, the rest by splash lubrication.

-The following illustrations belong to 120 hp. First we have a rear view where we see the famous lubrication box. They will not use not only this brand, but others too, as we will see throughout this publication.

-In 1915 the company was registered as “Beardmore Aero Engines Ltd.”.

-At that time, Beardmore-Halford-Pullinger constituted "BHP" that developed the famous "Puma".

-But besides F.B. Halford, collaborated with Beardmore to improve their engines.

-From this Scottish company in Glasgow came the 160 hp engine (also manufactured by Arrol-Johnston, between others.

-In fact, it was an evolved 120 hp up to 200 hp.

-Actually we see no external differences between the 120 and 160 hp engines.

-Beardmore was commissioned to build, within war effort, about 1,500 ABC "Dragonfly" engines as a subcontractor, but they did not have time to deliver any before the end of WWI in 1918.

-And between 1919 and 1922, with the 160 hp experience, appeared the 840 hp “Cyclone” with 6 inline upright cylinders and long stroke.

-The Beardmore engine located in a German museum where we see the two magnetos -unlike the other Beardmore engines- are at the front. It delivered 170 hp at 1,200 rpm.

-This engine was mounted on the RAF BE2b.

-In 1917 Beardmore made a nice ad for their 6-cylinder engine, possibly the 120 hp.

-Three years later, the ad was already less elaborate, more a pen drawing. Inside it we see the 500 hp V12 engine.

-The 6-cylinder version, but with inverted cylinders was called Typhoon. It gave 850 hp.

-From the Meteor and Whirlwind engines, we have references, but we have not found details.

Beardmore - Typhoon
"Typhoon"

-Both engines evolved from 6 to 8 cylinders with heavy oil -Diesel-.

-At that time the name changed, the Cyclone became Tornado with power limited by the rpm: 585 hp at low speed: 900 rpm. They were used on airships. And Typhoon became Simoon.

-Beardmore's Tornado was used on the British R-101 airship. It had two engines.

-From all these engines there appeared improved versions like I, II y II (or rather: MarkI, MarkII y MarkIII).

-In the year 1922, there was a Diesel engine of an unusual Beardmore design. It was a horizontally-opposed, twelve-cylinder engine.

-This engine was water cooled and we clearly see the two single-block injector pumps on the rear of the engine. One pump for each cylinder row.

-Now we insert some Breadmore engine pictures, which we obtained recently.

-The Cyclone illustration obtained from a German publication is showed below.

-And from a British publication, we show the engine that was mounted on the R-101 airship, classified as Beardmore C.I.

-And from another British source “Modern Aircraft”, we reproducer the 950 hp, six cylinder that looks like a Cyclone.

-Curious is the cross section, that shows the block with an exceptional width on both lower sides.

-Here is a new illustration for the 120 hp. With its lubrication box clearly visible at the rear.

From appendix 6: In the year 1926 they showed new images of the Beardmore “Cyclone” that gave 900 hp at low engine speed, 1350 rpm. They were intended for airships.

-The Cyclone was a six-cylinder engine while the Tornado had eight cylinders.

-The Tornado engine were installed in the famous R-101 airship just as we can see in the illustration below. It delivered 650 hp.

-The following Tornado model was the Mark 1 that gave 650 hp at 1100 rpm with a maximum power of 720 hp. It ran on Diesel heavy oil.

From Appendix 10: We obtained an illustration of two Beardmore "Cyclone" views.

-This model has upright cylinders. It had 6 cylinders inline.

-This engine gave rise to the eight-cylinder version called "Tornado". See main text.
