Aerospace Engines A to Z
Aerospace Engines A to Z

Updated: 23-Jan-2020

This state industry has two main aeronautical-material manufacturing divisions: the AVIC-1 for large and medium aircraft and AVIC-2 for regional aircraft and helicopters.

-The two of them produce aircraft engines, both civilian and military.

-They gather the following factories throughout the territory of the China mainland:

-Changzhou Lan Xiang, for the WZ-6 turboshaft manufacture.

-Chengdu Engines, build the WP6 and the WP-13. Possibly this factory is the CGTE or China Gas Turbine Establishment (GTE) That presented the WS-500 engine at the Paris Air Show and is situated in Chengdou.

Avic - WS-500
"WS-500"

-China National South Aero Engines, produces the Zhuzhou W-28 turboshaft, the WJ6, the WJ6-G1, the G4 and WS-11.

-Harbin Dongan Engine Manufacturing, build the WJ-5A turboshaft

-Liyang Machining Group took care of the WP7, WP-7B andl WP-13.

-Shangai Aero Engine Mfg.,  manufactured the WS8.

-Liming (antes Shenyang) Eng. Mfg., built the WP-6B, WP-7B and C, and the WP-13A.

-Xian Aerospace manufactured the WP5D.

From appendix 6: In 2010 we have a range of civil and military engines  (AVIC-1 and AVIC-2, respectively) with the power ranging from small 200 kgf. missile engines to engines with more than 1,300 DaN of thrust. They were exhibited in different air shows inside and outside China.

-Actually AVIC is the "Aviation Industry Corp," that joins together all manufacturers, including aircraft builders and their participants too. The aircraft commercialization is done by CAC (view) or Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China Ltd.

Avic - 9500 Kgf Turbofan
"9500 Kgf Turbofan"

-Below we show a quick product overview:

-The WS-5 was a WP-5 with rear fan.

-The Shengyang WS-6, -A y -B.

-The Shanghai WS-8 was a turbofan from SAF (Shanghai Aero-Engines Factory) that is now called SAE (Shanghai Aeroengine Manufacturing Corp.). This engine was similar to the American JT3-D.

-The WS-9 “Qinling” is a RR Spey168-Mk202.

-The Shengyang WS-10 “Tai-Hang” that gave 13,200 Kgf of thrust. They were developed from the Al-31 and -31F, and to replace them.

-The WS-11 is a copy of the Ivtchenko-Progress AL-25TLK.

-The WS-12 “Taishan” is a Chinese turbofan. The WS-12B is more powerful.

-The WS WS-13 known as “TianShan” was developed to replace the Russian RD-93.

-The WS-15 is an advanced turbofan.

From appendix 9: At the 9th Zhuhai Air Show in November 2012, “Aviation Industry Corporation of China”, trade name of the acronym AVIC, (ACAE) has presented various new designed engines, which by their look seem totally native.

-Remember that until now aircraft engines were built under license, especially Russian.

-An important surprise for who is trying to follow the aviation evolution in this country.

-And there are a lot of novelties.  By the way we are using official pictures (modified in B/W) and with the permission pending until the chapter's stabilization. See <eng.chinamil.com.cn/Qiao Tianfu>.

-The following turbofans are those who are in the catalog:

-WS-5 (based on the WP-5).

-WS-6. The WS-6A has been cancelled.

-The WS-8, is also cancelled.

-The WS-9 is the Rolls-Royce Spey RB-168 Mk-202, built under license.

WS-9, Qinling
"WS-9, Qinling"

-The WS-9 is manufactured by Xian Aero Engine Group and entered in operation in 1976, with a revival in 1998 and the newest version in 2003.

-We comment that the Huansan from GTE and the Xian E. Grup, are based on the Tumansky R-79 and R-79M engines.

Avic - WS-10A, Taihang
"WS-10A, Taihang"

-The WS-10 y 10A is based on the Russian Saturn (Lyulka) AL-31 y -31F. They started to build them around 1987.

-The WS-10A Taihang was manufactured by Shenyang Liming Aero Engine. There also was a modified version, the WS-10G, which was more powerful for the 5th generation Chinese fighters. They were sometimes confused (or not) with the name “Huashan”.

Avic - WS-11
"WS-11"

-This smaller turbojet is manufactured at Guizhou Aero Eng. Group. Built under license based on the Ivchenko-Progress AI-25TLK.

-The WS-12 is called “Tanggula”, which was manufactured by the GTE Chengdou Engine Group. It was developed from the “Taihang” and canceled in 1999.

-Some information tells us the WS-12 is called “Taishan” and another “Tianghan”. There also was a WS-12B version.

-The WS-13 “Tianshan” is the Russian Klimov RD-93, built in China.

Avic - WS-13
"WS-13"

-Finally we have the WS-15, built in the Chengdou Eng. Group or Shenyang 606 factories. The production started in 2006.

-On October 28th 2008, AVIC I and AVIC II officially consolidated into one organization to more efficiently manage resources and avoid redundant projects.

From Appendix 10: In these last years the AVIC corporation has acquired Continental American group from Teledyne. The new name is "Continental Engines Co." This company boosts the new Diesel engines for aviation, especially the CD-100, CD-200 and CD-300, which come from TAE Thielert Centurion when it went bankrupt.

-CD stands for Continental-Diesel.

Avic - CD-300

-On the other hand, on the Chinese mainland appears the WZ-9, which is a license for the European 1000 kW MTR-390. (WZ = WouZhou = Turboshaft).

-In Zhouzhou they build the WZ-8a, b and c under license from Turbomeca for the 848 CV Arriel 2C engine.

-But the latest news is the genuine -as it seems- Chinese WZ-16 design, presented at a Chinese air show in 2015.
