ORENDA JET ENGINES LTD engine specifications

Orenda Jet Engines Ltd. of Canada was established in 1956 as part of the English Hawker Siddeley group to build Canadian engines.

-Formerly called AVRO Canada, Orenda being a Division there of.

-This turbojet is an enlarged version of Avro Canada's Chinook.

-Orenda -9 and -10 started with 6,500 lbf. The models -11 and -14 reached 7,500 lbf.

-They were the engines of the CF-100 and Sabre aircraft that were built by Canadair.

-Almost 4000 Orendas were built.

-For the CF-105 aircraft, another new and more powerful engine, the Iroquois, began to be developed by the predecessor companies in 1953.

-Later the Orenda-Canada factory continued with its construction.

-The PS-13 Iroquois delivered 9,070 Kgf of thrust without afterburner, and reached 14,000 Kgf with it.

-In the 1950's it was considered the most powerful engine in the West and it only was surpassed by some Russians.

-The J-85 that was built under license, was a military version of the GE CJ-610, which began to be delivered from 1963.

-They were destined for the indigenous F-5s and for the CL-41 trainers. The engines are recognized as J-85-CAN-40.

-The J-79s, also from General Electric, were manufactured under license and under the designation J-79-OEL-7.

-Versions with afterburner were destined for the F-104 Starfighters built in Canada.

-We can see the quadruple stanchion fitted in the engine's air intake.

-In the engine jargon for turbines, these stanchions are called “islands”.

-Apart from supporting the front accessories and compressor bearings, inside are passing the transmissions for installations, controls, etc.
