This is Fabbrica Automobili Itala, from Torino. They made the Type 44 and 42 Hispano-Suiza engines under license.

-The HS 44 was a "cannon-engine" that gave 220 CV, and was built around 1919.

-In 1917 the HS-42 was made. It was more powerful, 300 CV at 1,800 rpm and with cylinders of 150 x 140 mm.

-There was the Itala upright 4-cylinder engine that gave 50 CV at 1,100 rpm and with a propeller 2 meters in diameter. It was mounted on a Voisin aircraft. It was followed by another engine that gave 65 CV.

-Designer Giulio Cesare Cappa carried out an interesting  engine project for Itala. This was the model 18 8-cylinder V-engine.

-And it is not until 1927 when this engine appears.

-This time designed by Giulio Cesare Cappa, a veteran designer from Fiat, who intervened in most of the engines of the first series A (A-12, A-14, A-15, A-18, A- 19, A-21, etc.).

-They entered a National Tender for a civil engine.

-They offered a liquid-cooled, twelve cylinders V-engine with compressor and reduction gear. The engine was designed by Ing. Cappa himself.

-This engine was called Cappa 18, and its power was 430 CV at 2,300 rpm.

-It had a full cowling with a very clean appearance. The four exhaust pipes were connected to 3 cylinders each.

-On this engine, at least four caps have the Cappa logo instead of the Itala one, the construction company. It is exposed at the Polito de Torino.

-With regard to the Itala-Maybach engine, this one is also at the Polito. It was a six-cylinder in line, based on the Maybach AZ, and it was renamed Itala / Maybach D.1. (see Maybach)

-This engine has a low but elongated profile, and has six cylinders.

-In the Maybach chapter appears this engine with a flywheel that has turned out to be a fan. It is assumed that the radiator would be in front of said fan.

-It is estimated that Itala made about 80 Maybach engines under license.

-They also made a 4-cylinder 50-55 CV.

From Appendix 7: We located a four-cylinder engine with 50-55 CV that is not mentioned in the main text.

From Appendix 10: We have a new photograph of the upright 4-cylinder inline engine. It is published in a previous appendix of this work, but this photo is not mutilated in the upper waterway.
