HINDUSTAN AERONAUTICS
(India)
(See HAL).
In its beginnings, it was simply "Hindustan Aircraft", in Bangalore.
-In 1959, they designed and manufactured the first Indian aviation engine that was mentioned as completely indigenous. This was the PE-90H, which we have already seen in the HAL chapter.
-It gave 90 hp at 2,600 rpm and ran on 73-octane gasoline, due to its relatively low compression ratio of 6.7 to 1.
-This was very useful since it was the common gasoline in India. This engine was manufactured until the year 1970. It was also known as HPE-1. It had double ignition. Although it is mentioned as an indigenous engine, its carburetor and two magnetos were not made in India.
-Another four-cylinder was the PE-100 that gave 100 hp at 2,600, and was built in the years 1962-63. It was equal to the PE-90H but with increased bore and stroke.
-The HPE-2 was a six-cylinder, giving 185 hp at 2,450 rpm, and to reach 250 hp at 2,650 rpm.
-It was a gearless engine that was built between 1965 and 1975, and was applied to the HAL HA-31 Mk1 agricultural aircraft.
-They also made 8-cylinders with the horizontally-opposed cylinder formula like the previous ones. These engines with fuel injection were built between 1975 and 1977, and gave 400 hp at 2,650 rpm.
