In March of 1909 Glenn Hammond Curtiss and Augustus Moore Herring founded the Herring-Curtiss Company. In 1910 they changed the name to Curtiss Airplane Company. In 1916, the Curtiss Airplane Company and the Curtiss Motor Company were joined together and became the Curtiss Airplane and Motor Company.
The "Silver Dart" aircraft was powered by a Curtiss V-8 that was modified in its valve train.
-The rockers of this engine look very "current" for being of that time.
-The engine is also known as Curtiss Silver Dart. First the engine had aspirated intake valves, which were changed by the concentric controlled type.

-The shown engine is at the Aviation Hall of Fame and Museum of New Jersey.
-These engines were supplied with another reference, the Herring-Curtiss, as we see in the following ad of the time.
“Herring-Curtiss ad”
-Actually, around 1909, Glenn H. Curtiss had a "partner": Augustus M. Herring. The clarification is here due to the fact that it is mentioned in the ad.
From Appendice 6: The same two-cylinder V-engine for aviation that we see in the main text is now installed on the motorcycle from which it is originated.
-La colaboración de Herring con Curtiss es importante hasta el punto de adaptar motores del segundo para el primero (ver Herring-Curtiss). No en vano ambas compañías estaban en la misma ciudad de Hammondsport, en el estado de Nueva York.
The collaboration of Herring with Curtiss is important to the point of adapting engines from the second to the first. Not in vain both companies were in the same city of Hammondsport, in the state of New York.
-De hecho, The Herring-Curtiss Co. era el distribuidor oficial de la marca.
N.del A.: Algo parecido a este tipo de colaboración ocurriría en Barcelona entre Hispano-Suiza y Abadal (ver ambos).
