Manufacturer of the most lavish cars in the United States, in the style of Hispano-Suiza, Rolls-Royce or Isotta Fraschini.
"Duesenberg logo"
-It is Duesenberg Motors Corp. and beside the fabulous cars, they made aviation engines at the Rockford, Iowa plant.
-It was in 1917, when Frederick Duesenberg started the company in Elizabeth, NJ.
-He made a four-cylinders upright inline engine that became known as A-44. It was water cooled and geared.
-Its power was 70 hp, given at 1,500 rpm, and the pistons had a diameter of 4'375 by a stroke of 6 inches, which was a common construction for the brand's cars.
"Duesenberg 125 HP"
-The 4-cylinder, in line engine with 125 HP, gave its power at 2,100 rpm, although the propeller rotated at 1,210 rpm due to the gear.
-The pistons measured 4.75 inches of diameter by 7 of stroke.
-The second engine he put into project was a V-12.
"Duesenberg V-12, 300 HP"
"Schematic diagram for the 300 HP"
-It also gave 300 hp at 1,400 rpm, like the Lancia, although by coincidence.
-The next engine was a larger one, with 16 cylinders in V, it was the "H" model.
-It was an engine with two cylinder blocks at 45° and with a welded structure.
-This engine delivered 850 or 800 hp according to the version, if it was geared or not. In the latter case the crankshaft rotated at 1,800 rpm.
"Duesenberg H"
"Schematic diagram for the Duesenberg H"
-The H-Model engine was built by Duesenberg Motors Corporation in Elizabeth, NJ.
-They made famous American luxury cars in the first half of the 20th century.
-They made this engine in the style of their cars, a great engine. With 16 cylinders in V.
"Duesenberg H"
-Logically having 16 cylinders, the V formed by the cylinders was 45° (45° x 16 = 720°, that is, the two turns required for the 4-stroke cycle).
-It gave 800 hp at 1,800 rpm.
"The Duesenberg H on test bench"
-There was also interest for manufacturing the European , Lava Type 4 and Bugatti engines, which were evaluated, building the "U" model of the latter as King-Bugatti. (see Bugatti).
"King-Bugatti"
From Appendix 6: This high-class car manufacturer located in St. Paul, made engines like those cited in the main text.
-Now we have pictures of the four-cylinder engine from 1915. It gave 70 hp at 1,500 rpm, being able to deliver 80 hp at 2,000 rpm.
“Two views of the engine, (cutaway)"
-Although presented as an aircraft engine through the Flight magazine, it is clearly inspired by the automotive industry. An engine with a formidable crankshaft.
-This well-known brand of American luxury cars in the first half of the twentieth century, made a large aviation engine with 16 cylinders in V, the H-model.
"Illustration from a Duesenberg advertisement"
-On this engine is standing out the large number of exhaust ducts leaning over from the top. Take into account that there are two exhaust valves per cylinder: 16 x 2 = 32 exhaust ducts.
"Picture of a Duesenberg at the NASM"
-The latter photograph was taken by Larry Rinek from AEHS during the convention of this company held in 2010.
From Appendix 7: New photographs of this brand's V-12.
-Perhaps the best known engine was the U-16 or the King-Bugatti, made by this brand.
-But thanks to the rescue by D. Greenless in <Theoldmotor>, via Fred Roe Collection and courtesy of Racemaker Press, we are able to show these new views.
-The V-12 engine is from 1916 and gives 350 hp.
“Duesenberg V-12, rear and side view”
-The first one appears in the main text, although it is improved and details can be seen better.
-In the illustration below, the Duesenberg V-12 is installed on a rudimentary test bench or wooden plank.
-Observing in the background a lot of easels and wood, a typical way of operating at the time.
-The test propeller is three-bladed and very strong.

"Duesenberg with 4 inline cylinders"
From Appendix 9: News about the four-cylinder inline engine of this car manufacturer.
"Aeronautical magazine clipping"
From Appendix 10: I received three new photographs of two of their aviation engines.

"The 16-cylinder Duesenberg, with propeller"
-And also a picture of the 24-cylinder engine from which the Author only recognizes its marine destination.
"Final assembly of the Duesenberg 24 W"
.-These photographs are arranged in this annex to add or replace the main text if they seem of higher quality.
-The engine called Duesenberg-King-Bugatti U-16 was built by the American car company Duesenberg.
-Now we have new photos of these aviation engines, which were little used and built.
"Duesenberg U-16 in a US museum" (PiP)
-The U-16 were two Bugatti 8-cylinder inline engines, installed in a common block with two individual crankshafts joined by a front gearbox.
“Front detail with the two joined engines” (PiP)
-It is said that about 50 engines of this model were manufactured only.
-Below we show another photo of the same engine on the right side in which we can see the two magnetos, for a cylinder row, between the two carburetors.
"View of the Duesenberg U-16 with two magnetos"
-The other cylinder row also had its own magnetos. In total, the engine had 4 of them.
"The other two magnets well visible"
-Very well, we can see the bunches of high voltage cables from the magnetos to each spark plug. There is a total of 32 spark plugs.
