In 1930, Louis Coatalen settled in Saint Ouen, near the Seine and founded "Diesel Aviation". (See Sunbeam).
-It is in 1924 that Mr. Coatalen experimented different injection systems with a British single-cylinder Sunbeam engine.
-He built high-powered car and truck engines until 1928, when he presented a 6-cylinder engine at the London Aviation Show. This engine gave 140 CV at 2,000 rpm and was derived from a Panhard.
-On this course he decided to deal with a sound aviation engine, a V-12, with gear and supercharger.
"Coatalen ad"
-It would be the Coatalen 12Vrs2 model that gave 550/600 CV.
-A beautiful engine, although on the long run there were consistency problems with its structure and especially with the cylinder heads that made it fail to prosper.
-The monobloc injection pumps are at the rear, above the supercharger.
-We found a better perspective of the famous Coatalen Diesel engine.
-It is the twelve-cylinder 12Vrs2, in V at 60°. At that time, before WWII, he already used the "common rail" type direct injection system, which was so popular in the automotive industry during the beginnings of the 21st century.
"Coatalen - 12Vrs2 Diesel"
-A well-preserved Coatalen engine is located at the MAE in its engine reserve stock.
-We see that the superposed reduction gear for the propeller has a very strong resemblance to that of the Hispano-Suiza engines of the same time.
-Designed by Louis Coatalen, see also the Sunbeam chapter.
