Bates Engineering Co. was founded by Carl S. Bates in Chicago in 1907.

-From these beginnings are the horizontally-opposed, two-cylinder Bates engines with 20 hp in 1908, the 8-10 hp engine in 1910, and the 4-cylinder with 30 hp in 1909.

-A water-cooled 40 hp Bates engine with a Livingston radiator was mounted on the Bates II biplane in 1909.

-The 25 hp 2-B engine, shown while still in the packing case together with its propeller, has a production date of   1910. The intake valves are automatic and the exhaust ones are controlled. It was one of the different engines that was used by  MB Sellers on his “Cuadriplane” between 1908 and 1913.

-In 1910, the company joined forces with Ray Harroun, that resulted in a two-cylinder, 24 hp engine. In 1912 Bates Aeroplane Company was sold to Heath Aircraft. Co. There is a reference from 1914 about a Bates V-8 engine that gave 115 HP, the 8-B model.

-In 1924, there appears a two-cylinder, 26 hp, Bates engine.

-Still from the Bates Motorcraft Co. they made a horizontally-opposed, two-cylinder “Junior” that gave 36 hp at 1,900 rpm and 40 hp at 2,100 rpm.

-Between 1909 and 1910 appeared a Bates engine with four inline upright cylinders and a displacement of 198 cu. in. delivering 30 hp.

From Appendix 6: The 2B model was built around 1910. It delivered 25 hp at 1,200 rpm. It had automatic intake and controlled exhaust valves.

-The unit that we show below is exhibited at the Washington Smithsonian Museum. But as mentioned, it lacks elements of the intake system, the magneto, spark plugs, and high voltage wiring.

From Appendix 10: In the main text is mentioned that in 1910, a four-cylinder inline Bates appeared in England. Now we have found it in a 1911 ad in a copy of the American "Aeronautics" magazine.

-We also spotted a 25 hp, two-cylinder 2B engine. There was another 8/10 hp smaller 2-cylinder boxer model.
