Survol presented really small four-cylinder engines at the 1979 Paris Air Show.
“Survol, Pygmée”
-They are designed by E. Coucy and Charles Fauvel of Cannes-La Bocca.
-The latter was the famous manufacturer of gliders and flying wings which he powered with his own Pygmée engines.
-The Pygmées have side valves, with combustion chambers in L-shape, intended for self-propelled motorized gliders.
-These are engines with notable characteristics although side valves had been abandoned long ago. But thanks to the cylinder and cylinder-head design the circulation of the mixture was very good.
-The propeller is fitted on one end of a reinforced camshaft, which allows it to turn at half speed without the need for a fragile and complicated reducer.
-The smaller engine, 900 cc (65 mm x 68 mm), has high compression, 9 to 1 and gives 40 hp at 5,500 rpm of the engine, being 2,750 rpm for the propeller. Reduction 0.5 to 1.
-The size of the engine was 44 cm long by 45 cm wide and 32 cm high.
-Another somewhat larger Pygmée engine gave 55 hp at 5,500 rpm. Both engines could have single or double ignition.
