It was the BF Surtevant Div, of the Sturtevant Manufacturing Co., Jamaica Plain, MA.

-It started manufacturing engines with the D-4 and D-6 in 1911.

-The D-4 was an upright four-cylinder, water-cooled engine giving 50 HP.

-The D-6 had the same construction system as the D-4 and gave 86 HP at 1,700 rpm. (73 HP at 1,300 rpm). In the Benoist aircraft.

-Due to the time it was built, the D-6 had “L” type combustion chambers (in this case, inverted L).

-In fact, just like a great majority of engines of that time.

-Here we can see cleaner lines than in the previous photo.

-Depending on the propeller that limited the revolutions, the power varied up to a mere 60 HP at 1,200 rpm.

-With 430 cu in of total displacement.

-The E-4 and E-6 are from 1912. We have several illustrations of the E-4 but none of the E-6 at this time.

-The four-cylinder E-4 model had reduction gear and gave 100 HP. The propeller rotated at half the crankshaft rpm.

-As a detail, note the air passages through the oil pan for cooling, which is a device similar to that used by some German Mercedes of the same period. See.

-Naturally, the E-6 was a six-cylinder in-line engine.

-In 1913, it is mentioned that Sturtvant made water-cooled, four- and six-cylinder V engines giving 40 HP and 60 HP respectively.

-In 1915, the 8V, Sturtevant model 5A with 140 HP, appeared.

-The 5A-4-1 and 5A-4-2 versions followed in 1916, also with 8 V cylinders and water-cooled. But they gave 210 HP at 2,150 rpm with a reduction gear as well.

-Now we come to the little-known Model 7. It was a 300 HP V12, of which we can show its semi-front and rear appearance.

-The Sturtevants were produced between 1915 and 1916 in Marblehead, in the state of Massachusetts.

-These engines had reduction gear, double ignition and gave 140 HP of power.

-Now we show a Sturtevant in a picture from the Flight magazine exhibited at the Seattle Museum, photographed by Joe Gertler.

-It had 90° V-8 cylinders and “L” type chambers. Similar to the Thomas-Morse.

Later appeared the 5A with overhead valves and general aluminum that was derived from the above mentioned engine.

From Appendix 6: A clear picture of the 60 HP engine is provided below.

-Considering that this photograph is from 1913, we have to say that in that era they were building really nice and surprisingly well finished engines.

-Now in 2010 we have received an illustration of a Sturtevant model 5, located in the Museum of the Flight in the USA. In the main text the 5A models appear.

From Appendix 9: We have been sent an illustration of the Sturtevant 6 cylinder inline with a drawing that has two cylinders sectioned for better interpretation.

From Appendix 10: From the American magazine “Aeronautics” between 1909 and 1914, several Sturtevants appeared in advertisements and articles.

-The D-4 gave 40 HP and the D-6, with 6 cylinders, gave 60 HP.

-The Sturtevant 5A is a 140 HP V8, engine with its cylinders arranged in pairs.

-At the assembly line, 4 engines were produced daily, the assembly line with the workers next to the material was at the B.F. Sturtevant Co. of Massachusetts.
