STAL is the manufacturer of the Dovern turbojet.

-This is Svenska Turbinfabriks ab Ljunström (see Ljunström-Angturbin AB). Expert in steam turbines.

Stal-Dovern
“Stal-Dovern”

-The Stal-Dovern was an operational engine that first ran in 1951 and flew in 1953 on a flying test bench. It was intended to power the SAAB J-35, with 3,300 Kgf of thrust rotating at 7,275 rpm.

-The Dovern had a 9-stage axial compressor, 9 separate combustion chambers and a turbine.

-Finally, the competition for the J-35 was won by the RR-Avon, built by Volvo Flygmotor.

-But long before, Ljunström had tested turbines (since 1935) and in 1946 launched the “Skuten” (Witch) shown at a Stockholm exhibition in 1949.

STAL Skuten
“STAL Skuten”

-The Skuten served as the basis for the Dovern. It delivered 3,200 lbf of thrust and it was designed at the Svenska Turbinfabrik AB Ljunström company in Finspáng, near the SAAB factory.

-Known versions of the Dovern are the Dovern II-A, a basic engine. The Dovern II-B, which was a II-A with anti-ice systems.

-The II-C was a II-B with afterburner.

-Interestingly, the starter motor could be electric with direct current at 112 volts or by firing a cartridge from the BTH company (English). See also the Glan.

From Appendix 9: The main text does not mention the “Glan” engine, of which we have obtained an illustration from CZ. (Evzen Vsetecka).

-The main product of STAL (Svenska Turbinenfabrik Ab Ljungström) was the “Dovern”, intended for the first indigenous Swedish jets.

-It seems that the first product of STAL (not Ljungström) was the “Skuten” of 1949.

-Regarding the pulsejet built by SAAB model R-7, STAL was in charge of improving it, changing it to the name SR-7H.

-Now, we have the side cross-section drawing of the “Glan” that was intended for the Saab 35 Draken.
