“Socièté de Motorizations Aeronautiques” is an intermediate company between Renault Sport and EADS Socata and which was finally absorbed by Snecma (Safran). See.

-The SR-305-230, born as MR200, originated from 1997 designs and was well resolved. It was large like the current American equivalents, but somewhat heavy (Diesel).

-It can therefore run on diesel but also, and this is important, on Jet A-1. Which enables it to continue after AVGAS 100 LL gasoline is withdrawn for being an environmental contaminant as it contains lead.

-This engine was designed with the intention of retrofitting many airplanes that will be affected by their current engines.

-Initially, a range of four engines was planned, the MR-200, the MR-250, the MR-180 and the MR-300. The latter has 300 HP. This range covered almost all current General Aviation aircraft.

-And since the dimensions of the engine are almost identical to the ones it is trying to replace, it seems like a good solution.

-But by requiring a turbocharger, the installation needs large inter-coolers that cause the hoods to be modified.

-The Société de Motorizations Aerienes continued with the Renault Sport and Morane-Renault engine.

-Eventually it would move on to Snecma where it continues.

-Through the previous references we can find more information about this four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. It runs on Jet A-1.

-Lately, adapted diesel automobile engines such as Mercedes and Smart have entered the market, which are undermining this project.

-Finally, the engine that is already approved, is the SR305-230.

It has four cylinders and mixed cooling: by air in the cylinders and by oil in the cylinder heads.

From Appendix A3/6: It is the Renault Sport engine passed to the Societé Motorisation Aeronautique and which is currently integrated into Snecma/SAFRAN.

-The SR305-230 engines have a displacement of 5 liters giving 230 HP at 1,200 rpm and up to 12,500 feet of altitude. All SMAs are Diesel engines.

-The SR305-230E model gives the same power 230 HP for 10,000 feet, having reached 20,000 feet of altitude in tests.

-This is the last variant known at the time of this writing and of which we provide a photograph.
