Both Rateau and Szydlowski are famous for their work with superchargers, compressors and turbochargers, and later turbojets as well.
-Even more, the Szydlowski patents would lead to the founding of Turbomeca, the small-turbine company. (see).
-Rateau already had its company from where it manufactured its patents.
“SH-18”
-Around 1935, the Salmson company built an engine designed by Mr. Szydlowski and his collaborator Planiol. The engine became known as the SH-18.
“18Cm twin cylinders”
-The SH-18 had 18 double cylinders (as did the 18Cm, although with individual chambers). Furthermore, the SH-18 was a two-stroke engine.
“Schematic section of the SH-18”
-Certainly the comparison with the previous cylinders is not valid except for the construction of the crankcase, since in both cases the front 9-cylinder row was facing the rear one.
-Once again we find ourselves with a two-stroke and with unequal displacements of the pistons in the cylinders since one advances before the other. This is achieved by offsetting the crankshaft journals by 15° on the same webs.
“Actual SH-18 schematic”
-The union of the cylinders is by their heads and if we except the connecting rod system, it is the one used by the ISO motorcycles that we have already known in Spain, especially in the “Isocarros”, from the years 1950-60's.
ATTENTION!!
-The SH-18 was a two-stroke, water-cooled, diesel engine that gave 600 CV.
-Sometimes it is known as CM18, but it appears to be exactly the 18CM of the main text.
-It may happen that the cylinders with the letters of the reference are exchanged depending on who handles the data.
-It is composed of two 9-cylinder rows giving 500 CV at 1650 rpm.
