PIRNA

(East Germany)

PIRNA engine specifications

Due to the Soviet-like mode of organization, there were design bureaus and production organizations, VEBs (Vereinigung Volseigener Betriebe Flugzeugbau).

-The one dedicated to aircraft engines was VEB Entwicklungsbau Pirna.

-In the town of Pirna were those responsible for the design and development of gas turbines. These engines were manufactured in Ludwigsfelle.

-Russian 1900 hp Ash82T piston engines were made at the Karl Max Stadt factory. (Lic. Shvetsov).

-The first turbojet engine was the Pirna 014, with a thrust of 3.150 Kgf.

-This Pirna had a certain kinship with the well-known German WWII engines.

-If we compare the latter with the Pirna 014, the architecture of the engine is of maximum similarity between both, not only the shapes but even the sizes.

-The Pirna -014 was used for the development, study and preparation of subsequent projects.

-The Pirna -014A1 was the one that was already built.

-The -014A1 was in full production in 1958/1959.

-This engine was bound for the VEB Flugzeugwerke four-way transport plane, “Dresden 152”.

-The Pirna -015 was a 4,500 Kgf “By-Pass” engine of which we show a general sketch below.

-Below we show the front part -under construction- of a Pirna -016, in which the compressor guide vanes are of a variable angle.

-The -017 is an engine intended to be used on training aircraft.

Pirna -017

-The -017 was also used in auxiliary groups and for industrial uses. The Pirna -017A was the test prototype and the "D" was a development of the "A".

Pirna -017D
“Pirna -017D”

-It gave 130 CV at 32,000 rpm, with heat exchangers to recover part of the heat energy from the exhaust and thus reduce specific consumption.

Pirna -017E

-Finally, the last known version of this engine, the "E", still delivered an equivalent 130 CV.

-These engines had a 2-stage turbine, a centrifugal compressor and the combustion chamber was identical in design to the French Turbomeca, of the “mushroom” type.

-They had no fuel injectors. Fuel was introduced into the chamber as by "sprinkling".

-The Pirna -018 was a turboprop project of considerable structure.

-The Pirna -020 engine had a 3-stage fan and a double compressor as it was a 2-shaft engine.

-The Pirna -022 was a turboprop very similar to the -018.

-The -027 is a 235 CV turboshaft with centrifugal compressor and centripetal turbine.

-The combustion chamber was annular and it had a centrifugal fuel sprinkler.

-The Pirna -029 was very similar to the previous one, with 240 kW. power.

-Many of these engines had their marine or industrial application.

-Like the -014 that was applied to marine applications, using the gas jet to drive two separate turbines for the vessel's two propellers through reduction gear.

-However, the Pirma 014 at the Berlin museum is the one used in the marine gas turbine propulsion project, as shown in the main text.

-The initials SGA refer to “Schiffs Gasturbinen Anlage”. We can see the air intake of the bell type (Bellmouth). Marine use SGA-051/1.
