NODONG

(North Korea)

NODONG engine specifications

Nodong made engines that were derived from Isayev and Makeyev's designs for the "Scud". They are rocket engines for the "Taepodong I" missile, using nitric acid and UDMH, with almost 15,000 Kgf for 225 seconds.

From Appendix 7: Nodong made a 35 Ton rocket engine, which was a design of Isayev that was used on Russian R-18 missiles.

-Curiously the Nodong engine that is related to North Korea in the main text, now appears in a photograph of Vahid Reza (Fars NA) in an exhibition in Iran with another LRE-4 group for the second stage.

-Both engines are destined for the Iranian Safir-1B carrier. It is mentioned that they run on new fuels made in Iran that are rated "Very High Energy".

-However, as we see, the chamber is rather of a design that is very similar to that of the German V-2, that is to say, old-fashioned. The turbo pumps are already bigger.

-They are Russian engines (or based on Russian ones) made in Iran and North Korea. They are mainly Isayev's brand engines.

-Isayev's design was taken advantage of by varying the size for various launchers. Fuels also varied.

-The Nodong ran on UDMH (or TM-185, or TG-082) and AK-27. When the power became insufficient, "clusters" or grouping of several engines were used. Four in the Nodong example below.

-The engines are clearly based, if they are not the same, on the exported Russians. And on the Shahab as well.

-Nodong engines have the same name as Nodong missiles. When we dig deeper we find numerical references that distinguish them between them.
