Aerospace Engines A to Z
Aerospace Engines A to Z

This is "Maximotor Makers Co." from Detroit, MI.

-The engines were designed by Max Dingfelder. Their production appears between 1908 and 1915.

-The 1908 A-4 had four vertical water-cooled cylinders and gave 50 HP at 1,200 rpm.

-In 1910, the same engine would give about 60/70 HP.

-There existed two versions of the A-6 in-line six-cylinder in the same style as the A-4, giving 70/80 HP and 80/100 HP.

-There was an eight-cylinder in-line engine that gave 100 HP, and was water cooled like all of the brand's engines.

-There also was a 6-cylinder in-line engine that reached 150 HP.

Maximotor A-8
“Maximotor A-8”

-The A-8 had eight cylinders in V and in groups of two by two cylinders of the same model as the other engines.

-The V was formed at a 90° angle, and it gave 115 HP at 1,600 rpm.

-Below we see it again in a top view.

-Below we provide a new model of the Maximotor brand, the B-4.

-This engine is exposed at the NASM. It appeared in 1912, and gave 70 HP at 1,200 rpm. It was used on airplanes of the time as some Wright, Curtiss, Bleriot, Farman.

From Appendix 6: We now have the Maximotor Model B-4, built by Max Dingfelder in Detroit, Michigan. This was around 1911 to 1913.

-As we can see from the main text, Maximotor made 4 and 6-cylinder in-line, and eight-cylinder V-engines. All of them were water cooled.

-The B-4 gave 70 HP at 1,500 rpm with four upright water-cooled cylinders.

-The B-6 is also available in two photographs that we show below. They were from the year 1915 and gave 100 HP.

-In their early days (at least until 1915), Maximotor engines were classified as follows:

-A-4, 40/50 HP, 4 cylinders in-line.
-B-4, 60/70 Hp, 4 cylinders in-line.
-A-6, 70/80 HP, 6 cylinders in-line.
-B-6, 90/100 HP, 6 cylinders in-line.
-A-8, 120 HP, 8 cylinders in V.
-B-8, 150 HP, 8 cylinders in V.

-All engines ran at 1,500 rpm at their maximum power and were water cooled.

-We found two ads from Maximotor with its logo and two different views of engines.

From Appendix 10: In 1913 the following models were available for immediate delivery to customers:

-Model "A" 4-cylinder, 40-50 HP.
-Model "B" 4-cylinder, 60-70 HP.
-Model “C” 6-cylinder, 70-80 HP.
-Model "D" 6-cylinder, 90-100 HP.

-At this time they were preparing the V8 engine known as the A-8 Vee-type model, delivering 110-120 HP. The ads back then said they offered engines between 50 and 150 HP (rounded).

-The four-cylinders were offered, as we have seen, in two powers, varying for this the internal cylinder dimensions.

The image below shows the entire engine together with its different parts.

-We also see a front elevation on the left side of the illustration, piston and connecting rod and the camshaft.

-The crankshaft does not appear here but we have another picture in which it is shown and we see that it has a magnificent appearance for the time.

-It does not lose any value in anything from the current ones. It also has ball bed bearings.

-As it is the 100 HP engine, it must be the “D” model. We can see a starter crank available to the pilot.
