Project carried out during WWII, based on the toroidal principle that acted as a gas generator for aviation turbines.
“Lutz engine cross-section”
“Lutz engine, uncovered”
-With 6 pistons joined 3 to 3 within a toroidal chamber, forming other small ones between the pistons. The pistons advanced in impulses forming these small compression and expansion chambers until they reached the successive exhaust and intake ports.
-The effect was to pump air in turn through other ports located in the lower part of the engine. Below we see these gas generator ducts.
“Lutz engine schematics”
-This unit could be grouped with others, as in the project presented by Otto Lutz.
-In fact it was an engine with the operating principles of free pistons in the style of Pescara, Kamm, Junkers, etc., but toroidal.
“Büssing engine”
-The first test was made at the automotive company "Büssing" in 1944 in the city of Brunswick.
-Finally, the complete engine, as intended, can be seen in the following illustration of a power plant for high-speed flights.
“Lutz project”
-A gas generator, one of those mentioned above can be seen in the Smithsonian Museum (NASM). The sign indicates "Swing Piston compressor -Radial 6".
