LEVAVASSEUR

(France)

See Antoinette Levasseur

This is León Levavasseur, who in Jules Gastambide's company manufactured the engines that bore the name of Antoinette .

-In May 1906 the alliance between Leon and Jules occurs, settling in Puteaux, founding the company "Antoinette" (name of the latter's daughter, Jules Gastambide).

-Their engines were important for the time, and there were many models. The V-8 formula could be repeated in V-16.

-It is therefore an honor due to Levavasseur to mention him in this section.

-Also on several occasions the Antoinettes appear as Levavasseur engines as well. Not to be confused with Levassor, by Panhard.

-Great and unmistakable in appearance, with his sailor cap, curious black hair on his head and red beard. In the photo with the President of the Republic at the 1909 Meeting in Reims.

-We took the opportunity to insert in this chapter a rare 20-cylinder V engine that according to some information is an Antoinette, but no construction details justify this.

From Appendix 7: Ferdinand Ferber commissioned Leon Levavasseur with a somewhat special engine for his Number 8 aircraft.

-By the Levavasseur and Antoinette chapter, we see that their engines were basically V-8.

-Ferber's order was to make an engine in two parts with 24 CV in total, each one driving a contra-rotating propeller so that it does not affect the torque effect and the aircraft gains control.

The two engines (half engines) are on either side of the propeller shaft. Curious arrangement, besides the engines are installed transversely.
