The number 3 engine of the Renault 3 series that is built under license to be installed in the RAAF aircraft, is mounted on the “Silver Wings” biplane. It gave 70 hp and had 8 air-cooled cylinders in V.
From Appendix 6: Kelly and Lewis Ltd of Melbourne had already built machinery since the previous century, and internal combustion engines since 1910.
-In 1915, by government demand and for the Air Flying Corps, they made engines (few, maybe only 3 and one of them is exhibited in the Victoria Museum, the Australian National Aviation Museum).
-These V8 engines were made under license from Renault. They gave 70 hp, and were destined for RAF B.E.2 aircraft.
-Later they would rotate among other aircraft.
-Other engines were designated to be built by Tarrant Motors Pty Ltd. (in the distribution of contracts) and also Aubrey Lock Engines.
