Aerospace Engines A to Z

The "JPX Ateliers" are near Le Mans, in Vibraye.

-Today the company is called as SARL JPX.

-They are specialized in light engines for ULM and motorized paragliding.

-They initially made horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engines based on VW for homebuilts and VLA. In addition to General Aviation.

-The first JPX engine seems to be the PAL-342 that gave 28 CV at 5,500 rpm and used chain reducing gear.

-It was built based on a kit to increase the Yamaha DT MX125 cc motorcycle to 175 cc, by replacing cylinders, cylinder heads and pistons.

-Thus in 1978 a 2-stroke engine with 2 horizontally opposed cylinders appeared, the PAL-342.

-In 1981 they built a two-stroke, three-cylinder radial with a displacement of 642 cc (636 cc = 3 x 212 cc). This engine, the PAL-640 gave 35 CV at 4,000 rpm. The PAL-1300 was a larger three-cylinder radial.

-Another version of 4T was under study.

-The PUL-212 was a 2-stroke, single-cylinder at low cost, with 212 cc giving 22 CV. It is used in motorized paragliders.

-The PUL-425 is the 424cc, two-cylinder version of the PUL-212.

-The PUL-425 gave 22 CV at 4,600 rpm. Another version of the PUL-425 is the one that was geared with four belts and its pulleys.

-Currently, the D-160 is in production (although the commercialization is discontinued according to recent information). It has a displacement of 160 cc and gives 14 CV. It was offered with direct output for the propeller or with reduction gear.

-From the D-160 came out the two-cylinder version. With horizontally-opposed cylinders.

-First an exact 320 cc version was made, the D-320DD and D-320R engines (Direct Drive and with reduction gear, respectively). They are produced from the year 1995 to the present. It gave 18 CV with muffler and 24 CV without it. Both output powers are at 6,500 rpm.

-As from 2002, the D-330D and R are presented. They are refined versions of the previous one. Curiously, they give the following powers rotating at 6,500 rpm:

-20 CV with the brand's muffler
-25 CV with free exhaust outlet.
-30 CV with a special “tuned” exhaust.

-To achieve the necessary powers to offer a competent engine with other brands for General Aviation, the 4T-60/A was made. It has a displacement of 2,050 cc.

-These engines are built from 1985 to the present, they give 61 CV at 3,140 rpm and 65 CV at 3,200 rpm.

-The next engine was the 4TX75/A or /AM with 2325 cc giving 80/85 CV similarly, somewhat larger.

-We located photographs from a JPX 4TX75/A model catalog. This engine gave 85 CV at 3,000 rpm.

-This engine in turn gave way to the 4TX90, the normal version giving 82 CV at 2,900 rpm and the B version 90 CV at 3,000 rpm. They were manufactured from 1997 to the present.

-There appears a JPX 425 installed on the nice “Souricette”, giving about 15 CV with two cylinders, and as we see it has an electric starter installed.

-A curiosity of this brand is a small turbojet. First for aircraft models, then already on "drones" later on RPV and UAV.

JPX T-260
“T-260”

-The first known was the JPX T-240 model. It delivered 8.83 lbf of thrust at 120,000 rpm running on liquefied propane gas. (LPG)

-It had a centrifugal compressor, centripetal turbine, high speed bearings and ball precision. Starting is done by compressed air driving the compressor.

-The greasing oil has a separate tank, but it has a spray system with its own feed. The sound level at full power was 72 dB.

-The T-240 gave way to the T-280 with 17.76 lbf, and these were already to be used on UAVs and Drones. They had ceramic bearings, and were running on propane gas.

JPX T-260
“T-260”

-The T-260 has ceramic ball bearings just like the T-280, and achieves 6 Kgf of thrust at 121,800 rpm. It runs on propane.

JPX T-260K
“T-260K”

-The T-260K is more powerful and more reliable than the previous ones. But it runs on kerosene and 6% of oil.

-Much larger is the T-620 with 44 lbf of thrust at 80,000 rpm, for use in small light aircraft.

-With the experience of the T-260, the T-340 is specifically designed for military use on drones and UAVs. It has a thrust of 33 daN at 75,000 rpm.

-The first tests were carried out in 2001. It runs on kerosene.
