The English Electric Company Limited (EE) was founded in 1918 and was initially a company dedicated to the manufacture of industrial electric motors, transformers, locomotives, diesel engines, and steam turbines. Later they expanded to electronic devices, nuclear reactors, guided missiles, and military aircraft.

In 1942 EE took over D. Napier & Son Ltd, manufacturer of aviation engines. It was the only aircraft-engine activity of this company.
