Establishments of mechanical constructions that manufactured aviation engines under license.
-Its main activity was the manufacture of automobiles between 1903 and 1950.
“Logo”
-Under license, they built the 8-cylinder Bugatti and the Hispano Suiza 8-cylinder V-engine during WW1. They also built the Clerget-Blin 9B.
-In 1923, a liquid-cooled 18-cylinder W-engine was presented. It had aluminum blocks and steel sleeves.
-It was designed for 700 CV at 2,500 rpm, but it remained in prototype state.
-In 1938, they made an engine that was designed by E. Goshawk. It was an engine with 12 cylinders in a horizontal position, but arranged as in the barrel type engine. It had an output for two propellers with two concentric contra-rotating hollow shafts.
-That's why it was planned as "cannon engine". It gave 900 CV at 3,600 rpm. The arrival of WWII interrupted the work.
-The Hispano-Suiza V8 engine was also built by car manufacturer Delaunay-Belleville, in the war effort during WWI.
"The Delaunay-Belleville at the 2003 exhibition in Mataró (Barcelona) "
-The engine that was exhibited at the aviation centenary belongs to the aviation engine collection of Mr. Josep Castellsaguer, who is a private collector and lover of mechanical technology.
-This specific engine was exposed without the camshaft cover on the right side, and the enameled black paint, so characteristic for these engines, had disappeared.
-But the author has had occasion to see photographs of the state in which this engine was achieved, and we must congratulate Josep.
From Appendix 6: Below we show a recently acquired photograph from 2009 by private collector, Mr. Josep Castellseguer in Mataró, near Barcelona. It is a Delaunay-Belleville 9B engine that was manufactured under Clerget-Blin license.
"Delaunay-Belleville 9B at the 100 Years Exhibition"
-Delaunay-Belleville was a car builder before WWI and its collaboration and experience became necessary in the war effort.
-They made these engines and the Hispano Suiza V8 as well.
-The engine of photography, perfectly restored, has been exhibited -together with other aeronautical material- at the Commemorative 100 years Exhibition of the first flight made in Barcelona by Julien Mamet in a Bleriot XI, on February 11, 1910.
“Engine identification plate”
-The identification plate shows "Automobiles Delaunay-Belleville" and below it "St.Denis -Seine".
-On this particular engine it also indicates the serial number, 2120, and the engine Type, "Type 9B". Another engine plate mentions "License Clerget-Blin".
"Cylinder head details"
-We see some interesting counterweights that release the valves during engine rotation and keep the pushers against the cam plate.
-The intake-valve spring is spiral and the exhaust one is an angle spring. Around the stem of this valve everything is exhaust port.
"Two cooled sparkplugs"
-The Hispano Suiza of eight cylinders in V, type 35S, model 8BE that is exposed at the Museum in Munich has also been identified as a Delaunay-Belleville. (Photos courtesy AAMA).
"Delaunay-Belleville-Hispano Suiza"
"Hispano Suiza / Delaunay-Belleville"
-Parts are shown sectioned, including the superimposed gear with inclined teeth.
-Despite this, the bushing is not prepared to install the cannon through the center of the propeller shaft.
-The power of this particular engine is 220 CV at 1,500 rpm.
-The identification plate tells us (like the previous engine in this chapter): "Automobiles Delaunay-Belleville, St. Denis-Seine".
