CANTON-UNNÉ

(Switzerland)

CANTON-UNNÉ engine specifications

Design office for radial engines which were generally water cooled. It had its greatest progress when French Salmson acquired the manufacturing rights for this country.

-That is why they are better known as Salmson-Canton-Unné.

-The designers were Georges Henri Marios Canton and Pierre Georges Unné.

-Below we present a genuine Canton-Unné.

-In 1912 the water-cooled Canton-Unné 7-cylinder radial with an output power of 80 hp, was mounted on a Breguet III.

-Another 120 CV engine on the Voisin 3 in 1915.

-At the same time they began to install the new Salmson Canton-Unné engines. (See Salmson).

From Appendix 6: Switzerland/France. George Henri Marius Canton and Pierre Georges Unné patented their first fixed radial engine in December 1908.

-We show a drawing that was presented with the patent's statement.

-Outstanding is the gear arrangement shown on the top right, being 9, where all the connecting rods match.

-At the 1912 Paris Air Show this engine only appears with the original brand name and not Salmson-Canton-Unné (see).

-The one shown is a water-cooled, horizontal radial with gearbox for vertical rotation. It has a power output of 110 hp.

From Appendix 10: These are the surnames of two engineers who designed a well-known and successful model of water-cooled radial engines.

-One was Georges Henri Marius Canton and the other Pierre Georges Unné. They got the interest of Frenchman Emile Salmson who financed their projects.

-In 1912, the company "Societé des Moteurs Salmson. Systeme Canton-Unné" was formed.

-The cylinders are sleeved with red copper (cuivre rouge), and interconnected by water ducts. We can see the control rods that enter the front block at different distances as we see in the following diagram.
