UNIVERSAL ENGINE AND PROPELLER

(USA)

UNIVERSAL ENGINE AND PROPELLER engine specifications

There is an entry in the USNA for an engine with reference 3233/452.8. 1932-1933.

- The company was located in Berkeley, California. It produced several engines that were original in design.

- With the appearance of radial engines, they were individual engines geared to a central shaft, as we will see below.

- Let's first discuss the four-cylinder engine. Each cylinder has its crankshaft at its base, and this in turn has the gear that meshes with the central power unit. They are like individual engines that all add up at once.

- There was a design for a 32-cylinder Universal engine on four eight-rows. And here is a sectional view to appreciate the aforementioned.

-We see four small crankshafts joining two cylinders each (in a V). This is a radial, and it turns out there are four connected. In the next lateral section, each small crankshaft takes the connecting rods from two consecutive radial-shaped engines.

-The first two cylinders use a small crankshaft, and this has the gear in the middle, in dark. The two rear cylinders repeat the system, as do all those around the central axis.

From Appendix 6: The information and engines in the main text are complemented by another line of this brand: these are those with horizontally opposed cylinders.

-They are built in sections with interchangeable parts and for variable-pitch propellers. They could have two, four, or more cylinders and proportional power. The propeller rotated halfway around the crankshaft.
