In 1936, Waldo Dean of Waterman Aircraft Mfg. Co. at Metropolitan Airport in Van Nuys, CA adapted a Studebaker automobile engine and called it the S-1.

-It was a six-cylinder, water-cooled inline engine that produced 90 HP at 3,500 rpm. It had a V-belt reduction system (6 belts total).

-It received its Type Certificate from the Department of Commerce around 1937.
