Around 1924 Mr. L. B. Stedman patented a two-stroke engine with four cylinders in X.

Stedman, cross-section
“Stedman, cross-section”

-The patent literally states the following:

- “The Stedman two-stroke engine: Cylinders 2 and 4 discharge into crankcase 7, while cylinders 1 and 3 are supplied from a chamber surrounding the crankcase.

-When they descend, the sleeves of pistons 1 and 3 cover ports 4, thus cutting off communication between crankcase and chamber 8.”
