Aerospace Engines A to Z
Aerospace Engines A to Z

An original engine in which its greatest peculiarity was the total absence of connecting rods and crankshaft, which were replaced by cams and rollers (year 1910).

-This arrangement was not new because already in 1900 Arnaud et Marcot based their engine on an identical principle, only varying the shapes.

-Later we see the same thing in the Caminez engine.

Schiske engine
“Schiske Engine”

-It has four radial cylinders in a cross (X) with power output on both sides of the central crankcase and on each of them there is a propeller.

-This propeller arrangement is reminiscent of Manly. The exhaust valves are controlled and the intake valves are free or automatic on the piston heads.

-The plunger rollers are linked together by special joints. The mixture is admitted through the motor shaft, which is fixed. So in the end it is another rotary engine.

From Appendix 9: In the treatment given to this engine in the main text, the original and exceptional device that it has inside is not mentioned.

-The side view was not available at the time of that description. The motor is of the 8-shaped lobe type but the mechanism is double. If we look at this side section, the shaft is divided in the center so that each one has its double cam also rotating in a contra-rotating direction.

-The two shafts come out from each end of the engine, having their propellers attached there.

-It is clearly seen that the two propeller shafts are divided by their center. Each has its lobes so that S1 belongs to the W1 axis and S2 belongs to the W2 axis.

-Also each piston has two rollers that rotate one opposite to the other.

-In a way we will see this principle, but alone, instead of double, years later in the Fairchild “Caminez”.

-The vertical two-blade propeller is in front of us and the horizontal one is behind the engine.
