“Pope - Toledo”
-It was generally known, before the commemorative dates of 2003, in many writings, that the engine used by the Wright brothers in their first flight was a Pope-Toledo of their time. It was modified to adapt it to the Flyer I aircraft for the function it was supposed to undertake, and perhaps it was also lightened. Here collaborator and mechanic Charles Taylor intervened.
-On the other hand, other references say that the engine was entirely built by Charles, with more or less details and in a very short time. At that time, the means to make a machine such as the aforementioned engine were not within reach to everybody.
“Engine for the Flyer I”
-But anyhow, Charles Taylor has the honor of being the first heavier-than-air aviation mechanic.
-In the USA, the FAA annually grants the “Charles Taylor Awards” to outstanding aviation mechanics.
