Nippon Jet Engines designed among others the J-3 that IHI would build. There came a time when Japan started its own projects after WWII.
-For the Fuji-T1F2 training aircraft, which was made in a small experimental series, a Bristol Orpheus engine was used, and which was going to give way to the second version powered by the native Japanese engine from Nippon Jet Engines, the J-3 model.

-Before arriving at the J-3, NJE manufactured the JO-1 which gave way to the J-3-1 in 1956.
-Shortly thereafter, Ishikawajima Heavy Industries was appointed contractor for the engine and an order for three pre-production YJ-3.3s started immediately (see IHI).
