Vern Newbold presented a turbine-reciprocating compound engine at Oshkosh '89. It had internal pistons and no crankshaft.

-The block rotates and gives force to the output shaft. Its inventor, Vern Newbold, was an EAA member and operated its engine in said international exhibition.
