In 1913, Welles Adams released its water-cooled, 50 hp inline four-cylinder engine.

“Welles & Adams V8”
-The following year, in 1914, they produced a V8 engine that gave 135 hp V8 at 1,350 rpm.
-It displaced 763.39 cubic inches and was water cooled.
-The Welles-Adams engines were manufactured by the company in Bath, New York.
From Appendix 6: The main text describes a Welles-Adams V8. A four-cylinder inline engine has now been located with sufficient and accurate information.

“Two ads for the four-cylinder engine”
-The second advertisement includes a cross-sectional diagram.

“Two views of the left side”
-On the left side, we observe the magneto and the fuel system with carburetor and intake manifold, rocker arms, and a water collector at the top. The magneto has a large permanent magnet.
-This contrasts with the view of the right side, which is bare of accessories. Water enters through the bottom of the cylinders.

The W&A Engine, Carburetor Side
-The 50 HP, four-cylinder engine was frequently advertised in American aeronautical magazines in 1912.

“W&A 50 HP”

“Another version of the engine in a 1912 ad”
-The author was struck by the phrase in the lower right corner of the advertisement:
“If you wish to do something better than “Grass-Cutting”, consult Welles & Adams.”
-Continued discussion of this brand's 50 HP, four-cylinder engine.
-First, a diagram of the side and rear elevations, showing the engine's architecture.

-Around 1912, a pioneer like Fred Eells used this engine in his aircraft, which he used for aerial photography.
